DELAMINATIONS

Delaminations are one of the most common types of damage. They can happen with any composite board, whether from impact or bonding failure. While some brands see it more than others, it’s an industry-wide issue. In most cases—unless there’s a catastrophic manufacturing defect—delaminations are repairable and can hold up well long term when addressed correctly. If you notice a delamination, stop riding the board. Continued use allows moisture in, which can worsen the damage and reduce repair success. Addressing it early gives you the best result and confidence in a solid, reliable repair.

Here's one from an obvious impact. The customer ran into something, which separated all four layers (topsheet, fiberglass, edge and base). First step was to straighten out the bent edge and get it back in the natural curve of the nose. Next, some of the fiber material was removed to reduce the thickness of the repair and make some room for the epoxy. Lastly, the sliver of topsheet that was too mangled to save was removed and everything was sealed, sanded and full tuned from there.

Edge Correction: $20
Relamination: $20
Full Tune: $80

TOTAL COST: $120

This one looks worse than it was. There was no ding that caused this, it just delaminated and the edge material got a little bent while it was exposed. Luckily, it was super easy to tuck back into the slot and laminate it in place. It didn't need much grinding so it just got a basic tune.

Edge Repair: $10
Relamination: $10
Basic Tune: $65

TOTAL COST: $85
snowboard edge delamination with edge popping out

Here is a topsheet specific one. The customer has this chunk rip while in line at the hill and was able to cut it off and save it for the repair. It was a pretty large section so the big clamping plated were used and enough clamps to keep the pressure distribution even.

Material Prep: $10
Relamination: $25
Finish Sanding: $5

TOTAL COST: $40

This impact related delamination separated all the layers of this tail. Topsheet, fiberglass, tip fill, base, and metal tail plate were all compromised. After the layers were corrected and realigned, the tail was laminated back together and then ground flush.

Material Realignment: $25
Relamination: $20
Full Tune: $80

TOTAL COST: $125

Here is an edge delamination that was a bit twisted up, but still workable enough to get it back in line without having to do a replacement. Once it got back into position, the edge was relaminated in place and full tuned.

Edge Correction: $20
Relamination: $20
Full Tune: $80

TOTAL: $120

Here is one with a missing section of sidewall. It was not impact related. It just had a bad lamination and the chunk popped out while riding. The first step was to clean the area out and remove the old epoxy and any debris in the area. Next, the core was leveled out to a uniform depth. From there, a new chunk of sidewall was prepped and shaped to the correct size. After that chunk was laminated and set, the excess material was filed down flush to the existing sidewall. The board was also stone tuned for racing.

Area Prep and Leveling: $20
Sidewall Prep: $20
Lamination: $10
Filing and Sanding: $20
Stone Tune: $95

TOTAL COST: $165

Here is a simple delamination in a common spot for this style board. This is either caused from running into something while riding switch, or more commonly, just setting it down too hard on pavement in the parking lot. First step is to correct the curvature of the edge back into its original position. Then the layers are all laminated and the board is full tuned. Easy peasy.

Edge Correction: $5
Relamination: $5
Full Tune: $80

TOTAL COST: $90
