EDGE REPLACEMENTS
An edge replacement can look like the end of the road for a board—but it doesn’t have to be. This is a specialized repair that requires experience and precision, but when done properly, it’s a long-term solution that can last the lifetime of your board. Pricing is higher than most repairs, generally over $100, but rarely exceeding $200. If you’re seeing damage like this, take a breath—you’re in good hands, and your board can absolutely be brought back to life.
This board had a smashed in edge, along with base damage. A new piece of edge was transplanted and cut with a wedge pattern to lock into the existing material. The damaged base material was removed and a new piece was templated in that same shape and epoxied in. The edge was then filed flush and full tuned from there.
Edge Replacement: $30
Base Patch: $20
Full Tune: $80
TOTAL COST: $120
This is a classic edge slam and delam. Obviously, the edge is bent up and non salvageable, so it needed to be replaced. First step was to cut back the base to expose more of the edge and find the closest spot of solid connection. The edge is then cut in a spot I like and a new piece is transplanted in. A base patch is added to sandwich it all together and the board was full tuned.
Edge Replacement: $30
Base Patch: $20
Full Tune: $80
TOTAL COST: $120
This board came in with the edge already missing around the entire perimeter of the nose. First step was to cut back the ends of the existing edge back to a point where they were straight and bonded well. Next step was to take a new piece of edge and bend it to match the curvature of the board. That new edge was laminated in place and the board was hand sanded in that area before doing a full tune.
Material Removal: $5
Edge Replacement: $50
Hand Sanding: $5
Full Tune: $80
TOTAL COST: $140
On this one, the edge had broken, and then water continued to separate the layers util it eventually snagged on something and ripped it out. The base was mostly unaffected, which allowed for a clean removal of the old edge and install of the new section without having to use a patch.
Material Removal: $5
Edge Replacement: $20
Full Tune: $80
TOTAL COST: $105
This was the gnarliest edge replacement project I have ever done. NORMALLY, I would have turned this down, as it is more expensive than I would feel comfortable charging someone for a repair. However, this was a situation where the board was brand new, and the customer's buddy borrowed it and didn't secure the roof rack on the way down from the hill. The buddy was willing to pay for it, and I was bored enough to take on the challenge. It took a lot of labor hours, and in 99% of cases I would recommend getting a new board here, but this shows what CAN be done.
This is obviously a massive delamination and mangled edge. The entire length of the damage had to be cut out and removed. The base was cut back beyond the damaged area to get a thick enough patch in there to hold everything together. The patch was fully custom and came out super clean. Everything was filed flush and full tuned. This board also had triple base, which made it a total pain in the ass to grind for that big of a repair. Triple base is wack.
A cool bit of feedback on this repair... This customer reported riding this board nearly one hundred times after the repair, and the new edge and patch both held without issues. This repair is more than I'd like to charge, but still cheaper than buying a new board!
Material Removal: $10
Edge bending and Replacement: $100
Custom Base Patch: $100
Full Tune: $80
TOTAL COST: $290
This is another super common edge replacement. It likely happened when stopping and accidentally running over a rock. The sidewall had been squished a little on that contact, so a little heat and sidewall correction to start off this repair. The material was removed after that, and the new edge piece was cut and fit to size. Cap it off with a base patch and a hand filing once the edge was set. The board got a full tune from there and is ready to go.
Edge Replacement: $30
Base Patch: $20
Full Tune: $80
TOTAL COST: $120
This board had a lot more extensive damage. Both sides of the board had significant areas in need of repair. On one side, a busted edge that needed a replacement and patch. On the other, a multi layer dented area that needed realignment and relamination. This board also needed a ton of p-tex work.
There was a lot to do on this board, and the price reflects that. But the customer loved this board and insisted on getting the repairs done versus buying a new deck. In the end, the board came out clean and the customer was super happy with their decision.
